Today is World Mental Health Day. This year, the theme is “Making wellbeing a global priority.” Such an important goal. Such a shame (and a puzzle) that it remains aspirational. This shouldn’t be difficult or controversial. Where to start? - If you’re a leader, create trust-based, high oxytocin cultures. If you’re not sure how to do that, write to me. I can help you. Here's the organizational return on that investment: 106% more energy 76% more engagement 50% more productivity 40% fewer cases of burnout 29% more satisfaction with their lives 13% fewer sick days - If you’re an individual, prioritize your own wellbeing and keep an eye out for others at home and at work. - If you’re a parent, let your children know when you make a choice in support of your well being and mental health. Normalize wellbeing. Encourage them (at all ages) to make choices in support of their own wellbeing. A few helpful and very simple steps to build a life that helps you establish and maintain wellbeing: -- Focus on your posture and breath practice. They're foundational. -- Live a life with REST (Retreat, Eat, Sleep, Treat) at its core: 🌿 Retreat: Block at least one short window in your daily schedule to take a break from all outside influences (including social media). It’s a great time to meditate. 🥗 Eat: No surprises here. Source and prepare fresh healthy meals – lean protein, whole grains, plenty of veggies, moderate sugar, low alcohol. 💤 Sleep: Multiple studies say we need 7-9 hours sleep but few get it. To improve sleep habits, try going to sleep a bit earlier, using power naps and waking naturally twice a week. 🌄 Treat: Replace the chips and candy with restorative treats such as reading a book, taking a walk/bike ride in nature, enjoying a hot bath, playing with the kids, whatever feels like a reward to you. -- Establish and stay connected to a network of supportive people. -- Remain optimistic through a heightened awareness of your emotions (including the courage to face up to the negative ones), developing a learning mindset, and boosting serotonin (twist at the waist, smile at yourself in the mirror, eat 70%+ dark chocolate), oxytocin (spend time with loved ones, share personal stories, acknowledge your strengths, identify shared goals, mitigate risk), and dopamine (look at something your find beautiful in art or nature, visualize a positive future, ). In other words, live Physically Intelligent lives. As with all change, making wellbeing a global priority starts with each of us. Please join me in destigmatizing the need for mental health support and celebrating efforts, large and small, to enhance our collective wellbeing. #mentalhealth #leadership #wellbeing #optimism
